Mother & Child

We do full pre-natal care, and are the only facility in East Timor doing routine screening for HIV, malaria, syphilis, hepatitis B, and anemia.
Vaccinations are an important part of ante-natal care, and we provide DPT, polio and measles vaccinations, following UNICEF standards.

Almost half of all children in Timor-Leste are undernourished, fewer than a third of babies are delivered by a trained health professional and 64 of every 1000 children will die before reaching five years. With three-quarters of the population living in rural areas, access to healthcare is one of the country's biggest problems. This is exacerbated by a lack of awareness among people about what services are available, why pre- and ante-natal check-ups are important, why and when a midwife should attend birth, as well as why children should be vaccinated. To meet these challenges, we participate in a national midwife training programme, we train lay midwives and inform about maternity health care during our mobile clinics (details in our “Outreach” section).
