Urgent cases: Help needed!

Bairo Pite Clinic have some urgent cases where we need immediate help to save the pasient. We are seeking independent wealth and generosity or special connection to a program doing clinical research in a field closely related to any of the above conditions. Not easy cases but all have well described even hopeful therapeutic approaches within reach of modern medicine.

Case 1: Bone marrow proven aplastic anemia

Fernando dos Reis, 19 yr old with bone marrow proven aplastic anemia. Failed on prednisone, cyclosporin, even depot testosterone. 20 transfusions, 7 sibs, looking for BM transplant, stem cell, or antithymocyte globulin… Even more attractive would be any tertiary center willing to administer high dose cyclophosphamide without stem cell rescue as per the John Hopkins protocol or some variation thereof. His most recent FBE demonstrates Hb of 25 g/L, platelets of 4 x 10^9/L and WCC of 2.6 x 10^9/L.

This young man has matured way beyond his age and has become friends with all at the clinic. He even risked his life to help put out an unfortunate fire in maternity last week earning him a new moniker, “Senhor Bombeiro”.

Status: NOT SOLVED but new developments

Update 4 August 2011:
We have recently received good news. The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA is willing to administer free treatment. This treatment could save his life! We found a host family for him to stay with in Takoma Park (thanks guys!), and have his passport ready. The visa is now being processed with help from the Ambassador, and we are applying to the government for funding for his travel expenses.
