Accommodation
Unfortunately, accommodation in Dili is fairly scarce, and accommodation of a certain standard is even scarcer. The clinic is only looking for places for volunteers for 6 weeks to a few months, and we are in competition with UN and INGO staff who can rent places for one or two years. Below is a selection of places to stay.
Homestay & Hostel
Vila Verde
House with 4 bedrooms in the central part of Dili, about 5 minutes walk from the clinic. The rooms have air conditioning. They share two bathrooms with showers. The house has a living room, dining area and kitchen. The cost is US$65 per person per week, incl cleaning, laundry, breakfast and dinner.
Bebonuk, Comoro
In the western part of Dili a family with seven children are renting 4 rooms in a separate building next to theirs. The blue and white painted house has a beautiful garden, and the compound has a security gate. Each room is furnished with bed, cupboard, table, chair and fan, and they share a bathroom (no shower but basic ‘mandi’ washing facilities). The cost is US$150 per month incl cleaning. Breakfast, dinner and laundry is an extra $50 per month. Transportation (to and from the clinic) is an additional $50 per month.
Perumnas, Bairo Pite
Perumnas is a house run by Madre Lourdes’ organization, IS-MAIK and is about a 10 minute walk to the clinic. Madre Lourdes was one of the founders of the clinic and runs an organization with projects all over Timor-Leste. She broke away from her order when she was younger in order to do more social activist-type work. The house in Perumnas is lived in by a few students and there are two rooms available for clinic volunteers.
The rooms are small and both have single beds and private bathroom with mandi style bathing which means no hot water. Both rooms have mosquito nets and one room a fan (no air conditioning). The cost is US$15 per night, meals (breakfast and dinner) is $42 per week, and laundry and ironing is $10 per week. The house is neat and tidy with two large eating areas.
East Timor Backpackers
The Backpackers is a 15 minutes walk from the clinic, towards the city centre. They have single rooms at usd 20 per night, double rooms at $25 and dorm beds at $12. Longer term stays can negotiate a discount rate. All rooms with A/C and fan. Western style toilets and showers. Bar & tourist information on site, many restaurants near by.
